2009 Girls’ State Meet Wrap Up

November 8, 2009

The 2009 edition of the Girls’ State Meet was one of the most exciting in recent years.  Fans were witness to close races, a tight team race, and a record performance.

The IHSSCA welcomed three new members into the Hall of Fame.  Swimming and diving Coach Bob Wren of Dubuque was inducted with swimmers Whitney Jensen of Grinnell and Brigit (Brunsman) Accinelli of Dubuque Hempstead.  Congratulations to this fine coach and outstanding athletes and their families!

This year’s meet produced seven automatic All-American times and fourteen times that qualified for All-American consideration.  Special congratulations go to Imelda Wistey of West Des Moines Valley on her state record performance in winning the 100 Breaststroke in a time of 1:03.75.

Two young women were double winners in individual events.  Bailey Pons of Cedar Falls captured the 200 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle events.  Marshalltown’s Meredith Johnson completed her high school swimming career by winning the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle.  Congratulations ladies!

In one of the closest duals for the team tile in years, Mason City won its first team title in 20 years edging out a strong Bettendorf team by a final score of 275 to 260.  Ames nipped Cedar falls by 2.5 points to capture third with a total of 167.5 points.  Additional congratulations go out to Mason City Coach Steve Hugo in being elected Coach of the Year.  Cedar Falls senior Bailey Pons was named Athlete of the Year.  Her two individual tiles each qualified Bailey for All-American consideration.

Thank you to the IGHSAU and the Marshalltown Community Y for hosting a great meet, and congratulations to all competitors and coaches on a great season and state meet!!!
