2007 Girls’ State Meet Wrap Up

The 2007 Girls’ State Meet was, literally, one for the record books.  Swimming fans were treated to numerous record-breaking performances, the likes seldom seen in one meet.

 

The IHSSCA welcomed diver Kara Hajek and swimmer Leigh Taylor into the Hall of Fame.  Congratulations to these fine athletes and their families.

 

This year’s meet produced seven automatic All-American times and six consideration times.  Fans were treated to a total of SIX state records:

 

          Medley Relay: Valley - D. Harris, I. Wistey, A. Mehesan, K. Galles  1:46.72

          200 Freestyle:  Ames - Stephanie Koch  1:50.92

          50 Freestyle:  Valley – Alexa Mehesan  22.92

          100 Butterfly:  Valley – Alexa Mehesan  54.57

          100 Freestyle:  Valley – Lisa Nathanson  51.55

          200 Free Relay: Valley–L. Nathanson, D. Harris, L. Lamair, A. Mehesan  1:33.83

 

Two young women were double winners in individual events.  Valley’s Alexa Mehesan won the 50 Free and 100 Butterfly, both in state record times.  Ames’ Stephanie Koch was a double winner in the 200 Free (a state record) and the 500 Free.

 

West Des Moines Valley captured its third consecutive team title with a dominating 387 points.  Marshalltown repeated as the runner-up with 189 points, while Mason City took third with 184 points.  Congratulations go to West Des Moines Valley Coach Mark Corley and his staff on being named Coaching Staff of the Year.  Alexa Mehesan was named the Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year.  The Valley senior collected four state championships, all of which were state records and automatic All-American performances.

 

The 2007 Girls’ State Meet was one for the ages.  Congratulations to all the swimmers and coaches on a fine season!!!
